Vadose zone contamination and remediation

Session ID#: 75053

Session Description:
Soil and groundwater contamination is ubiquitous globally. Vadose zone soil pollution poses a risk to both groundwater resources and human health. Contaminants in soil vadose zone migrate to groundwater via infiltration, advection, and diffusion. Contaminated groundwater migrates horizontally to uncontaminated area, and subsequently migrate to the vadose zone and building indoor area, posing a health risk to utility workers and residents. Various remediation approaches such as soil washing, solidification/stabilization, bioremediation, chemical oxidation or reduction, have been used in numerous sites for risk management. However, the challenge of incorporating key mechanisms and patterns of contaminant transport, modeling efforts and innovative remediation options into large-scale models and sustainable remediation applications remain formidable. This session solicits contributions in theory, numerical modeling, experiments at all scales, and applications in soil pollution fate and transport, remediation materials and technologies, contaminated site management, and insights on future study directions.
