Feedbacks Between Volcanism, Topography, and Climate

Session ID#: 75492

Session Description:
Understanding processes that modulate the eruptive output of arc volcanoes is of interest due to potential influences on. The hypothesis that magma production, storage, and transport may be influenced by climatically-driven changes in surface loading (e.g., through sea-level change, mountain erosion, groundwater hydrology, and continental and alpine glaciation) remains controversial. The way volcanoes respond may impact the climate system, thereby generating feedbacks between crustal magmatic systems, climate, and topography. A deeper understanding of feedbacks between these domains will require advances on several fronts, including how magmatic plumbing systems respond over time, how landscape evolution impacts lithospheric stress states, and sea-level and ice histories. In this session, we welcome diverse contributions that begin to integrate these disciplines via field observations, petrology, geochronology, and numerical modeling. We particularly encourage contributions regarding chemical and mechanical signatures of melt evolution and eruption, landscape-shaping processes, and glacial loading and unloading in volcanic terrains.
