Ionospheric and Atmospheric Monitoring of Natural Hazards and Manmade Events

Session ID#: 76046

Session Description:
This session will focus on understanding of the dynamic coupling between solid Earth and its upper atmospheric layers including the ionosphere in response to a variety of natural and manmade impulsive disturbance events at, or near, the surface of the Earth. Such disturbance events include earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, meteor impacts, severe tropospheric weather events (e.g., hurricanes, tornadoes, tropical cyclones, thunderstorms), as well as explosions, spacecraft launches, etc. These events can perturb the Earth’s atmosphere via the generation of acoustic-gravity waves, which leave detectable signatures on neutrals and charged particles of the lower and upper atmosphere. We solicit theoretical, observational, and modeling contributions on analyzing the coupling between the surface disturbances and the upper atmosphere, ionosphere included. We welcome studies addressing the detection and early warning of natural hazard events using advanced forward and inverse atmospheric and ionospheric monitoring techniques.
