MR003
Advances in Ultra-High Pressure Science with Applications to Super-Earths and Giant Planets
Session ID#: 76333
Session Description:
The discovery of thousands of extrasolar planets around other stars in the galaxy raises new questions about their formation, evolution, and habitability. In the laboratory, dynamic compression techniques using high-powered lasers and pulsed-power systems as well as new double-stage diamond anvil experiments provide unprecedented experimental access to the extreme pressure-temperature regime of planetary interiors. Theoretical investigations using ab-initio electronic structure methods provide independent but complementary ways of elucidating the properties of matter. This session welcomes contributions from researchers spanning experiment and theory that address the properties of planetary materials under extreme conditions and the application of these results to build next-generation models of the formation, interior structure, dynamics, and thermal evolution of super-Earths and giant planets.
