Characterizing Fractures with Seismic Data: Theory, Methodology, Application

Session ID#: 76496

Session Description:
Seismic data is commonly adopted to interpret macro-scale geological features such as faults and folds. However, meso-scale and micro-scale features such as fractures are challenging to capture using the traditional seismic attributes due to the limitation in seismic resolution, subvertical/vertical fracture orientations, and minimal displacement along the fracture.  Reliable interpretations and predictions of fracture networks in subsurface have significant meanings in deciphering fault mechanism, mapping local stress field, and characterizing subsurface reservoir.

In this session, we welcome submissions that take quantitative approaches to characterizing meso/micro-scale subsurface fractures with seismic data. The topics may be including but not limited to: (1) advances in workflows of seismic acquisition, processing, and interpretation to characterize fracture networks; (2) development of fracture indicators such as seismic anisotropy, attenuation, etc.; (3) applications of big data and machine learning in fracture modeling with multidisciplinary data.
