The Influence of Oxygen Fugacity on Geochemical Processes
Session ID#: 76531
Session Description:
Oxygen fugacity (fO2) is an intensive variable that controls the geochemical behavior of redox sensitive elements such as C, S, Fe, Cr, Mo and V. Notably, the modern Earth shows a large range in fO2, varying from a highly reduced metallic core to an atmosphere containing free molecular O2. Constraining the fO2 of various terrestrial geochemical reservoirs is critical to understand redox reactions and redox-dependent volatile speciation in such diverse processes as core formation, mantle melting, atmospheric evolution and the origin of life. This includes, but is not limited to, the influence of fO2 on exchange between the deep Earth and surficial environments, such as magmatic degassing and subduction related recycling. This session is open to all submissions examining the influence of fO2 on geochemical processes, whether modern or ancient, shallow or deep. We particularly encourage interdisciplinary submissions working at the intersection of high and low-temperature geochemistry.
