Elastic and Transport Properties of Earth Materials: from Atomic Interactions to Geophysical Expressions

Session ID#: 76659

Session Description:
Our understanding of the origin and distribution of large-scale chemical and thermal heterogeneity in the Earth's interior is constrained largely by the interpretation of seismic observations, based on the elastic properties of candidate materials. In a similar manner, models for core and mantle dynamics are linked to the transport properties of candidate materials. Elastic and transport properties are determined from either experiments or theoretical calculations. These two approaches complement each other, in that experiments provide anchor points for theoretical predictions and theoretical calculations are able to explore ranges of pressures and temperatures that are difficult to access using experimental methods. In this session, we invite novel experimental and computational contributions on the elastic and transport properties of earth materials spanning from atomic to geophysical scales as well as on their application in seismic interpretation and geodynamical modeling of Earth's crust, mantle, and core.
