Asian Monsoon Variability in a Changing Climate
Session ID#: 77793
Session Description:
About two-thirds of South and Southeast Asian work force participate in agriculture. As such, monsoon has a tremendous socioeconomic impact in the region with imprints in water resources, agriculture, food production and hydro power generation. Despite sustained forecasting efforts over a century, accurate predictions of spatial distribution of monsoon precipitation variability from subseasonal to seasonal time scales remains elusive. This challenge is even more pressing as this variability is expected to change with global warming. This session invites papers on all aspects of Asian monsoon variability, and the impact of climate change on such variability. Papers discussing observed variability in a changing climate, predictability at intraseasonal to interannual time scales, model intercomparison and projections of future changes in monsoon variability are particularly welcome. This session hopes to bring attention to recent developments and outstanding challenges ahead for understanding and predicting the monsoon in a changing climate.
