ED016
Climate Literacy: Informal education, youth initiatives, community impact work, and reaching broad audiences

Session ID#: 78516

Session Description:
Preparing tomorrow’s scientists and decision makers to address the impacts of a changing climate is crucial. To respond, manage, and adapt to these changes, peoples of all ages need accurate, up-to date information, knowledge of the sciences, and analytical skills to make responsible decisions and long-term resiliency plans regarding these challenging topics. Informal education programs, including those at museums, aquaria, and environmental education organizations, are a major source of science information for the public and reach significant numbers of students. Educators have developed strategies to build climate literacy, with programs for youth, families, and communities. We invite proposals from informal educators and proposals related to advancing public science literacy through climate change education. We welcome abstracts describing innovative strategies, pilot or fully implemented programs, community-based climate change education initiatives, research about successful strategies and evaluations of efforts. We encourage abstracts addressing diversity issues in science and targeting STEM underrepresented communities.
