Regional-Scale Groundwater, Availability and Sustainability Studies
Session ID#: 79979
Session Description:
The joint occurrence of population growth, agriculture expansion, climate uncertainties and unsustainable surface water storage have accelerated groundwater pumping in intensely irrigated agriculture basins worldwide. This has inevitably led to the degradation of quantity and quality of groundwater basins. Understanding the long-term impacts of contaminant release on groundwater quality coupled with a high variability of climate conditions at the basin-scale is important for future water resources management. This session invites presentations of innovative monitoring and modeling approaches aiming to improve the management of regional-scale groundwater quantity and quality at the decades-to-centuries time scale. We highly welcome presentations developing regional transport models approximating the long-term effect of heterogeneity by upscaling the advection-dispersion equation at a large spatial scale. This session also seeks contributions that assess the impact of spatiotemporally variable climate conditions as well as anthropogenic pressure on groundwater quality and presentations working towards a coupled climate-hydrology-agriculture analysis.
