Panel Discussion: The Impact of Cold Ions and Cold Electrons on the Magnetospheric System
Session ID#: 80651
Session Description:
A panel will be convened to discuss (1) the impacts of cold-plasma populations on the Earth’s magnetospheric system and (2) how to incorporate those impacts into global simulation codes. The cold populations of interest include plasmaspheric ions, plasmaspheric electrons, cloak ions (including the oxygen torus), cloak electrons, cold electron outflows, and cold protons that are the byproduct of charge exchange. The panelists will be asked to (1) describe the specific impacts on the magnetospheric system of the various cold populations, (2) to address outstanding problems and what types of observations could address them. One panelist will then put forth ideas to the audience about how to ensure that these cold-particle impacts become incorporated into global simulations. The panel will then take questions and comments from the audience.
