Changes and impacts of climate variability in South America
Changes and impacts of climate variability in South America
Session ID#: 80771
Session Description:
Documenting climate variability in South American is important to better discern natural changes from external forcing due to global warming. The scarcity of observational climate data is a challenge to evaluate climate dynamics of the region and its connection to the global climate system. This session welcomes studies based on paleoclimate reconstructions and simulations of temperature and hydroclimatic variability over South America, as well as the assessment of climate change impacts on ecosystems and human populations. Increases in the frequency and intensity of extreme events, changes in the duration and spatial extent of the South American Monsoon, the Hadley Cell expansion, climate sensitivity of tropical trees, forest dieback, changes in the carbon cycle and reconstructions of El Niño Southern Oscillation, the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation and past volcanic eruptions are just some examples of relevant topics. Presentations of new datasets, multidisciplinary methodological advances and novel educational outreach approaches are also welcome.
