Rainfall and Temperature Dependence in a Changing Climate

Session ID#: 80996

Session Description:
Rainfall and temperature typically exhibits a negative dependence with large spatial variability over the land during the summer. Over the high latitudes, rainfall and temperature are positively correlated during the winter. However, increasing temperature trend, owing to global climate change, is inherently changing the dependence patterns between rainfall and temperature. Former studies have reported that General Circulation Models are underestimating the strong dependence between these two meteorological variables. An underestimation of the dependence between meteorological variables could result in biased estimates of land-surface attributes. Additionally, the rainfall and temperature relationship contributes to the bio-meteorological relief after prolonged dry spell, common to several tropical and subtropical countries. Considering these, we are proposing an oral session that must consider studies related to-

  1. Spatio-temporal variability of multiple aspects of rainfall and temperature dependence
  2. Preprocessing techniques that yield the dependence.
  3. Implication of the dependence on land-surface and bio-meteorological modeling.
