Pore–scale Processes in Porous and Fractured Media: Recent Advances in Experimental and Computational Methods

Session ID#: 85516

Session Description:
Mathematical modeling and experimental characterization of fluid flow, species transport, and solid deformation in porous media has far reaching implications for engineering subsurface systems including geologic CO2 sequestration, hydrocarbon recovery, hydrology, geothermal exploration, and nuclear waste disposal. Research over the past two decades has highlighted the importance of physicochemical interactions occurring at the pore scale in controlling the macroscopic response of geologic systems. As a result, there has been growing interest in developing novel experimental and computational methods that can expand our understanding and predictive capabilities of pore-scale physics. This session broadly invites submissions that present novel theoretical, experimental, and computational methods that focus on pore-scale processes in porous and fractured media. Topics include, but are not limited to, single/multiphase flow, reactive transport, interfacial/wetting dynamics, deformable porous media, multi-porous and low permeability materials (e.g. shales), fracture visualization, microfluidics, approximation and order-reduction algorithms, and coupling across process/scales.
