Assessment and developments in the structured metadata developer tool chain for Schema.org and associated extensions

Session ID#: 81359

Session Description:
The growth in the use of structured metadata built around Schema.org, and community extensions to it, is evident in announcements by Google and the increased number sessions on Schema.org at AGU, ESIP, and RDA. Much of this growth is due to the adaptation of existing workflows.

However, the lack of tooling focused on geoscience data and research facility workflows has been highlighted. The need to evaluate how community vocabularies are used, and to query datasets in more detail around other research concepts is growing, especially when working with large data volumes. Additionally, data providers are exposing more semantically structured metadata to aid Machine Learning and to align with the FAIR principles.

This session will look at: the range of tools needed to increase the simplicity, efficiency and connectivity of data provider and research workflows; advances in Linked Data and vocabularies, including versioning; and community recommendations on or extensions to Schema.org.
