Applications of Free and Open-Source Technologies for Advancing Earth and Space Science
Applications of Free and Open-Source Technologies for Advancing Earth and Space Science
Session ID#: 82541
Session Description:
Rapid advancements in technology, along with the Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) paradigm, have improved the pace and ability to conduct research. With larger data volumes and heterogeneous data types, there is a growing need for evermore complex data formats; however, these files often rely on tools that are unfamiliar to general users and decision makers. Also, further advancements of applied informatics in the Earth Sciences will depend upon the interoperability and reuse of software as well as the continued growth of open formats, data, and training datasets. The highly customizable nature of FOSS fosters innovation and increases collaboration by making resources openly available to various end users for reuse and development. This session aims to highlight FOSS geospatial web applications, tools, and platforms that utilize open data, software, and technologies in efforts to bridge the gap between scientists and decision makers in the Earth Sciences.
