Agricultural Sustainability – A Balancing Act of Land Management, Food Security, and Environmental Consciousness
Session ID#: 81570
Session Description:
Agricultural intensification has come at a cost through increased greenhouse gas emissions, soil degradation and nutrient runoff. Nevertheless, global agricultural production is required to increase significantly to meet higher consumer demands by 2050. Sustainable agriculture may help to mitigate climate change by targeting an increase in carbon sequestration and soil health through longer growing seasons, diversification and better soil, nutrient and pest management, which can promote the resilience of these systems to future changes in weather extremes. However, weather and soil conditions and climate change impacts vary widely across the globe, emphasizing the need to better understand how new technologies, plant or livestock breeds and management changes will affect regional agricultural productivity and environmental outcomes. More importantly, methods to engage farmers, consumers and policymakers in the development of science-based solutions are urgently needed, as they play a key role in shaping agricultural production systems.
