Volcanic and tectonic outgassing
Volcanic and tectonic outgassing
Session ID#: 81947
Session Description:
Volatile release from the Earth’s interior to the surface plays a fundamental role in planetary and atmospheric evolution and provides key insights into crustal processes. The main identified sources of volatile outgassing from the solid Earth are volcanoes and tectonically active regions. Recent progress has been made to assess the quantities, sources, rates and pathways of volatile outgassing from both volcanic and tectonic regions. This session focuses on the quantification, observation and modeling of volatile outgassing. We welcome contributions providing new constraints on the temporal and spatial variability of volcanic and tectonic degassing; advances in methods to better quantify volatile outgassing; the utilization of geochemistry and isotopes as volatile tracers; and interdisciplinary approaches to link volatile outgassing to crustal magmatic and tectonic processes. This session invites results from the ten-year Deep Carbon Observatory Deep Earth Carbon Degassing (DCO-DECADE) initiative and contributions from the community interested in volatile outgassing on Earth.
