Issues in Data Policy: The Ethics of Using Open Data Sets and Open Software in Geophysical Research
Session ID#: 82338
Session Description:
Open data and open software are marvelous things. When using open data (sub-setting it, incorporating it into models, etc.) the original data set changes context. What does that mean with respect to the issue of fitness for purpose? For open software, modifying code and using it for a different purpose changes its original intent. In the new context, who is responsible for the outcome of the code? Whose code is it now? What is the responsibility of the researcher in giving partial or full credit to a unique combination of open software and open data? Although such issues have long been discussed in technical arenas, the question of the ethical approach to using open data and software is still relatively new. This session will offer a platform for addressing these and other questions, and a venue for presenting leading practices around the ethical use of open data and open software.
