Towards Predictive Understanding of the Frequency and Outcomes of Compounding Disturbances across Terrestrial and Aquatic Ecosystems
Session ID#: 82721
Session Description:
Disturbances to ecosystem structure and function are rising in many regions with no deceleration expected in the near future. There is a pressing need to understand and predict spatiotemporal variation in the frequency and outcomes of disturbances. This need is particularly acute in the context of compounding interactions between chronic and pulsed disturbances. Until recently there has been relatively little focus on compounding disturbances, leading to critical gaps in understanding and modeling capacity. These gaps undermine our ability to predict outcomes of disturbances and associated impacts to ecosystem services provided to society. This session will bring together contributions spanning models, data, and their integration focused on understanding and/or predicting the resistance and resilience of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems to compounding disturbances. We aim to lay a foundation for increased focus on understanding and predicting the occurrence and impacts of compounding disturbances.
