Efforts to improve and support REU Internship Programs

Session ID#: 82812

Session Description:
Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) programs funded by NSF provide internship opportunities that are valued by employers and graduate schools, and help entrain students into STEM education and career pathways. Running an REU is a tremendous amount of work, and having access to shared materials, advice, and tools can be helpful in providing an effective, safe, supportive experience for students. Presenters are encouraged to collaborate with other REU site managers in presenting effective curricula, strategies, or mechanisms that could be useful to the REU community. Examples might include cultural sensitivity training, anti-harassment training, supporting diverse participants, cross-REU studies of application or evaluation data, community-building tools amongst REUs, or creative practices for teaching science communication, leadership skills, technical skills, or raising career awareness. Collaborative presentations that focus on methods of improving REU programs or supporting the REU community will take priority over detailed descriptions of a single REU program.
