Creating Harmony: Enabling the Composition of Science and Applications through Promoting Data Access and Sharing in Developing Regions

Session ID#: 83607

Session Description:
Data access and sharing is critical for the research, monitoring, and development of Earth science tools and models needed for real world applications across a variety of sectors. In developing regions, local to regional scale data is critical for improving Earth observations and modeling efforts, however, data sharing presents an obstacle given these data are managed across various private companies, non-governmental organizations, government ministries, and inter-governmental organizations.  To obtain these data it often takes years to develop the relationships and trust to share data that may come at a monetary price, with restricted use requirements and data sharing agreements, or disparate formats. This session seeks presentations that highlight experiences, lessons learned, and innovative technologies for filling data gaps and acquiring closed-source data through building relationships to incentivize data sharing in developing regions.  Efforts highlighting regional engagement, capacity building, collaborative research, and tools to help increase data access are welcome.
