Advances in Cross-Scale Imaging and Image-Based Modeling of Subsurface Processes

Session ID#: 85506

Session Description:
Natural and engineered subsurface processes are of great interest to hydrology and ecology, hydrocarbon recovery reservoirs, geothermal energy production, geological CO2 sequestration, gas hydrate, nuclear waste disposal,  groundwater remediation, etc. The heterogeneity across multiple spatial scales in geological materials poses significant challenges in understanding these processes. New static and dynamic imaging techniques (from pore to reservoir scale) are critical to probe the physical, chemical, hydrological and biological properties of earth materials and their coupled, time-dependent changes. New modeling and simulation methods utilizing the acquired images as inputs provide an effective way to understand and upscale the complex processes. This session focuses on recent advances in imaging techniques and image-based modeling of the physical, chemical, and/or biological processes from pore to reservoir scale, and the opportunities and limitations of applying these methods in the fields of hydrology, petroleum geology and engineering, geomechanics and seismology, geochemistry and diagenesis, microbiology, and soil science.
