Groundwater Temperatures in a Changing World– an Overlooked Potential for Shallow Geothermal Energy?

Session ID#: 85531

Session Description:
Changes in groundwater temperatures impact among others groundwater quality and the potential for shallow geothermal energy (SGE). Still, the influence of climate change and urbanization on groundwater temperatures and the associated implications remain largely unknown. E.g. in urban environments, the diffuse thermal impact of anthropogenic structures could represent a sustainable heat source for SGE. However, research exploiting SGE at the scale of urban aquifers is rare. This session encourages contributions focusing on changes within the subsurface thermal regime, and the direct or indirect consequences for humanity and nature. Possible topics include, but are not limited to, subsurface urban heat islands, borehole climatology, heat as a tracer, thermal contamination, permafrost hydrogeology in a warming climate, as well as solutions on energy potential assessments of SGE by means of novel monitoring, numerical modeling and management approaches. We particularly invite contributions addressing quantitative assessments allowing an integration of SGE in urban energy planning.
