Heterogeneity, upscaling and uncertainty quantification in subsurface flow and transport

Session ID#: 76176

Session Description:
Natural formations involve multi-scale, evolving heterogeneity structures, variably saturated and multi-phase flows, chemical heterogeneities, transient inputs or boundary conditions, moving interfaces, changing media properties due to dissolution, precipitation, or swelling. These and many other processes are challenging to adequately describe from sparse field data and require upscaling and uncertainty quantification strategies to capture the heterogeneity-impact on large scale behaviors. This session explores progress, challenges, and recent successes in upscaling, characterizing, describing, and modeling heterogeneities, and the tradeoffs between parsimony and uncertainty. We welcome contributions involving field data, numerical simulations, and approaches for upscaling and uncertainty quantification of steady and unsteady flow and transport phenomena in the vadose and saturated zones. This includes theoretical studies as well as case studies that involve realistic geological heterogeneities to offer guidance regarding how to deal with heterogeneity and uncertainty in their chosen setting.
