Abstract:
Soil moisture is an important variable in hydrology. However, in-situ observations of soil moisture are sparse and cannot characterize the spatial variability of large watersheds. Satellite remote sensing offers a distinct advantage by mapping large in a periodic fashion. But, the spatial resolution of satellite observations is around 10km and this is too coarse for hydrological applications. In our method, we use the 9km posted soil moisture product and downscale it using the relationship between surface temperature and soil moisture as modulated by vegetation. We present examples of validation of the 1km soil moisture with sensor networks in United States and other global locations.
