Drastic Changes in Regional NO2 pollution during COVID-19 observed by OMPS-NMs on NOAA-20 and SNPP

Abstract:
During the COVID-19 pandemic, anthropogenic activities are curtailed severely, leading to significant reductions in fossil fuel consumption around the world. The combustion of fossil fuels is the primary source of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in the troposphere. To monitor this air pollutant, we have developed a new NO2 product from the high-spatial-resolution (17 km × 13 km at nadir) global coverage of NOAA-20 OMPS. In this presentation, we show results to illustrate the high-sensitive tropospheric NO2 measurements achieved from NOAA-20. We present comparisons with tropospheric NO2 from SNPP OMPS-NM and S5P TROPOMI to evaluate consistency among the three independent measurements. Our focus is on the tropospheric NO2 changes over several regions (including Eastern China, Europe, and Eastern US) with high NO2 pollution before and during the pandemic. Our results demonstrate the successful development of a NO2 product from NOAA-20 OMPS-NM and its utility in monitoring air quality.
