Virtual Programs with NASA Scientists for Libraries

Abstract:
Through the NASA@ My Library initiative, libraries and NASA-funded scientists work together to offer virtual programs for learners of various ages. Virtual Programs with NASA Scientists are designed to create memorable experiences, providing opportunities for learners to meet and engage in meaningful discussions with scientists. The virtual programs are typically 30 minutes long, and include a brief presentation by the scientist, a related demonstration or activity led by the library, and time for discussion.

Based on the highly effective Portal to the Public Guiding Framework, NASA@ My Library partners have engaged over 400 learners in virtual programs. Programs were originally conducted by scientists prepared by informal learning institutions and connected virtually with a library whose learners participated in-person. In response to the pandemic, libraries are conducting their programs virtually for learners at home. NASA@ My Library prepares the scientists and library staff in advance, both in the technical aspects and in the skills needed to engage learners virtually. The library staff brings connections to their community and an understanding of their community’s interests, while the scientists provide an expertise in their science and unique perspectives and experiences to share. The Virtual Programs with NASA Scientists include strategies that invite learners to interact early and frequently, and demonstrations or activities that require few materials and connect to the scientists’ research and personal journeys through science. A project evaluation showed benefits to the libraries, scientists and learners participating in these virtual programs, including the opportunity to connect a broad audience with a scientist at a low cost and librarians feeling more comfortable facilitating programming with a scientist and with virtual connections.

This presentation will include details regarding these programs, including strategies for engaging audiences virtually, as shown in the evaluation results, and creating memorable experiences for a diverse group of online learners.
