Abstract:
Moving to a virtual environment changes the common channels for science communication, but not the need for it, nor the need for science communication training. What’s more, the virtual environment makes training more accessible to scientists and educators who would otherwise be limited by travel to onsite meetings and workshops. At the 2020 Earth Educators' Rendezvous, our six-hour virtual Science Communication workshop reached its 50-person capacity with a waitlist. Our highly interactive in-person training needed to be modified for the online environment while maintaining the key aspects we believe make the training particularly effective: practice, networking, and discussion. To maximize the benefits for participants, we also believe in creating a safe space. How to retain these elements in an online training?

The workshop spanned two days, with three hours in each day. This is the same format we have used at the same meeting in person in the past. Topics covered ranged from general science-communication basics of self-awareness to best practices for social media and combating misinformation. Lessons learned include: 1) not all activities translate well to an online format, but many do through the use of simple functions on Zoom and other online platforms such as breakout rooms and the chat window; 2) breaks and an invitation for self-care are just as important online as they are in person; and 3) not all modes and methods of communication and discussion work for all participants, so it’s critical to vary the presentation and discussion types through the workshop. In addition to sharing our lessons learned, we will share feedback from participants given at the end of each day that helped steer our approach and will inform our online offerings in the future.
