Building Researcher-Practitioner Convergence to Improve Natural Hazards Problem-Solving

Abstract:

Gaps in existing knowledge and experience related to addressing natural hazards currently outweigh the capacity to respond to major challenges in the field. Reducing natural hazard impacts and disaster risk requires better integration of research and practice, as well as strengthened connections, communication, cooperation, coordination, and collaboration between researchers and practitioners. The different demands and professional norms of academia, government agencies, and the private sector often hinder researchers and practitioners from sharing knowledge and working together effectively. Collaboration and problem-solving between researchers and practitioners need to be inclusive and emphasize empathy, diversity, curiosity, and adaptability. This session will help researchers and practitioners to increase their capacity to solve problems together inclusively by hearing the lessons learned and success stories of interdisciplinary teams wading into inclusive problem-solving that transcends disciplines. This capacity will create a sustained cycle of knowledge and action, resulting in more effective, scalable solutions being implemented across natural hazards and disaster disciplines. Whether you’re working to bring research to practice via simple information sharing or looking to co-create solutions with your counterparts, this session will provide tools and resources for any level of convergence.
