Abstract:
The Philippines is an archipelago country which is located in the western side of tropical western Pacific. There is a distinct summer monsoon rainfall in the western side of the country. This study focuses on the mature stage of summer monsoon in the western Philippines during July to August in 2019. We conducted four times a day upper-air observation and ten cloud particle sensor soundings at Tanay PAGASA weather station, installed 23 automatic weather and lightning observation systems called P-POTEKA in Metro Manila and lightning observation network over the western north Pacific using five very long frequency events trigger measurements called V-POTEKA at Palau, Guam, Manila, Okinawa and Serpong Indonesia under the ULAT (Understanding Lightning and Thunderstorm) of SATREPS (Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development) in the Philippines.

When the low-level southwesterly wind was intensified, moistening air was induced in the Philippines and rainfall increased during July to August 2019. Heavy rainfall of more than 100 mm/day was observed in Metro Manila on August 1 and 2. Atmospheric condition of synoptic scale was favorable for heavy rainfall on both days. The area of heavy rainfall more than 100 mm/day was observed widely in Metro Manila on August 2. On the other hand, it was limited in a small area on August 1. It was the first dense network observation in Metro Manila during the mature stage of summer monsoon. We need to investigate further what cause the local heavy rainfall and discuss the linkage with lightning activity and the possibility of short term forecast of heavy rainfall in the mega city area.
