Evaluation and Analysis of Rain Events in ERA5 and MERRA-2 During PISTON

Abstract:
This presentation focuses on evaluating the conditions that lead to the onset and growth of tropical convection over the Northern Equatorial Western Pacific in ERA5 and MERRA-2 gridded products. We focus on the August-October 2018 and 2019 time periods, when shipboard radiosonde, surface meteorological and scanning radar observations are available in the study region as part of the Office of Naval Research PISTON (Propagation of Intra-Seasonal Tropical OscillatioNs) field campaign. Additional radiosondes were also collected at islands in the South China Sea and the Philippines and are used, along with the PISTON soundings, to evaluate ERA5 and MERRA-2 representation of convective development during the campaign. The differences between the reanalyses and observed vertical structure and convective parameters on diurnal time scales and during the onset of precipitation events informs both warm and deep convective parameterizations and the ability of reanalyses to represent the different stages of convection in the region.
