The Political Landscape and its Implications on Science Policy

Abstract:

The federal science enterprise is essential for innovation as well as the health and safety of communities across the nation. Science and scientists have served to inform decision-making and have played a significant role in America’s competitiveness. However, from severe proposed budget cuts to exclusion of scientific expertise and data in decision-making, the science enterprise has fielded numerous attacks. While there has been bipartisan support for science in Congress, the 2020 election will significantly impact the role of science to inform environmental, public health, and other decisions of national import. This presentation will explore the current political landscape and its implications on science policies and legislative efforts.
