Abstract:
Navigating the New Arctic (NNA), one of the National Science Foundation’s 10 Big Ideas, supports fundamental convergence research across social, natural, environmental, engineering, computing and information sciences to better inform understanding of Arctic change and its local and global effects.
In April 2020, the recipients of NNA research grants came together as a community for the first time. At this meeting, investigators shared insights into defining characteristics of convergence research, difficulties that accompany this highly integrative and interdisciplinary approach to science, and strategies to promote success.
In addition, this newly formed community of convergence researchers discussed opportunities to encourage better knowledge sharing, integration, and synthesis between NNA projects and identified a number of community support mechanisms that might aid them in their efforts to work collectively and with community partners.
Using insights from the first NNA Investigators meeting, this presentation will introduce the NNA community to others actively engaged in convergence research; share valuable perspective on establishing new convergence research communities; and identify strategies, platforms, and tools that might be used by coordination offices and/or project leaders to connect multiple convergence research teams.
