A third wave of reconstruction led by JEDIs? Advancing systemic change through faculty and early career development to support retention and improved institutional climates

Abstract:

Although apartheid was abolished in the US with the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and despite it having been over half a century since the civil rights act, our fields have made little progress in racial diversity. But currently there is a collective awakening about the different ways racism expresses itself in society, including practices that uphold cultural gatekeeping of white privilege and supremacy in higher education. This talk will discuss the need for a third wave of reconstruction, examples of how collective discussions that re-envision higher education spaces and relationships took place and led to the learning ecosystems that are part of the Center for Diverse Leadership in Science, and the call for action led by Vernon Morris at NoTimeForSilence.Org.
