Abstract:

AGU 2020 Fall Meeting innovative session "Earth, Agriculture, and Society: towards sustainable development in the Anthropocene” brings together scientists from across the world to discuss socio-environmental dynamics that affect agroecosystems, both locally and globally, and to advance multidisciplinary approaches for mitigating and adapting to climate changes, and supporting a more sustainable development. Submitted presentations cover water and nutrient management, from sustainability and digital agriculture (exploiting new technologies of remote sensing) to hydro-ecological functioning. Subsequent presentations focus on soil erosion problems, natural and managed soil structure, land degradation in drylands (e.g., the role of agriculture), agricultural terraces and landscape infrastructure for sustainability and ecosystem services (the case of Europe and the Loess Plateau in China) and, finally, agriculture and global change (including Mesoamerican wetland farming, biodiversity, land use in the Anthropocene). The submitted presentations will be followed by a live, round table discussion moderated by conveners, with presenting authors also taking questions from the audience.
