Abstract:

Treasure Island is an artificial island of about 600 acres in the middle of San Francisco Bay with some 2,500 current residents. Built in 1936-37 for the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition and World’s Fair, the City of San Francisco is embarking on a $6 billion plan to redevelop this island and provide housing for 20,000 new residents. Doing so will involve major investment to address ongoing subsidence while protecting against sea level rise and coastal erosion. A simultaneous challenge is protecting the environment as well as the long-term integrity of the existing Treasure Island community. This project investigates the infrastructure careers and multiple organizations who are collaborating to see that this development is done in a well-planned, cost-effective, and environmentally sound manner.
