Abstract:

Located on the Mississippi River Delta, the City of New Orleans relies on a complex and aging water treatment system that takes river water downstream of hundreds of communities as far away as Minneapolis, Minnesota and provides residents with safe drinking water. This project focuses on the water treatment and distribution processes run by the New Orleans Sewerage and Water Board. It addresses the challenges of treating the water that New Orleans residents depend on for survival and the careers of the people who provide this vital infrastructure service. Project findings are based on interviews with current employees as well as independent research.
