Abstract:
The nine-County San Francisco Bay Area has long pursued the goal of sending “zero waste” to landfills. There are multiple geographical constraints, regulatory agencies and complex environmental regulations affecting the handling of Bay Area solid waste. Options range from recycling and composting of food waste for use as organic fertilizer to the ultimate landfilling of unusable residual waste - where the control of methane gas emissions, mitigating impacts to storm and groundwater and requirements for use of soil and alternative daily cover present an ongoing operational and environmental challenge. This presentation takes a close look at the geoscience of land disposal of waste and highlights the variety of careers in managing solid waste along each step of the process.
