Abstract:
After Hurricane Katrina, the City of New Orleans faced a daunting challenge: how to protect itself against inevitable hurricanes, storm surges and flooding events endemic to this low-lying Mississippi Delta city. In response, New Orleans invested in world-class resilient infrastructure, building the largest continuous surge barrier in the world – the $1.3 million, 1.8 mile long Inner Harbor Navigation Canal. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers also built one of the world’s largest stormwater pumping stations, the $615 million Permanent Canal and Closures Pump Station. This presentation addresses how the New Orleans Flood Protection Authority East and New Orleans Sewerage and Water Board collaboratively staff and maintain these unique infrastructures – and how the City of New Orleans uses the tools of geoscience as they systematically invest in green infrastructure and manage stormwater.
