Waves and turbulence upstream and downstream of collisionless shocks: properties, generation mechanisms and transmission

Session ID#: 117820

Session Description:
Collisionless shocks are ubiquitous in the heliosphere. They accelerate particles and are the source of a variety of electromagnetic and plasma fluctuations, from upstream ULF and Langmuir waves, to downstream compressional fluctuations at different scales. Shocks also affect the properties of turbulent spectra which have been found to vary depending on the location inside planetary magnetosheaths. There are still many open questions related to these fluctuations, such as: can upstream ULF waves be directly transmitted downstream? What is the role of shock rippling? How do collisionless shocks modify the spectra of solar wind turbulence? How do these effects depend on the shock Mach number and geometry? This session will provide a forum to discuss these processes across the heliosphere. We welcome presentations on planetary and interplanetary shocks, based on observations, numerical simulations and theoretical models.
