Waves in the magnetosphere: generation, propagation, characteristics and impacts
Waves in the magnetosphere: generation, propagation, characteristics and impacts
Session ID#: 122416
Session Description:
A variety of waves are generated in the terrestrial magnetosphere, including whistler-mode waves, EMIC waves, magnetosonic waves, ECH waves, time domain structures, ULF waves, etc. The generation mechanisms and characteristic features for each of these waves, including spectral features, polarization, propagation direction, and coherence scale, are essential to understanding the plasma redistribution and energy transfer processes. Waves may propagate large distances from their source region, affecting the plasma environment as they travel. The statistical distributions of wave properties and the global wave modeling enable us to understand their impact on particle transportation, acceleration and loss. This session invites studies of wave generation and propagation processes, as well as wave characteristics, statistical distributions, and modeling that advance our understanding of plasma waves, and the role they play in magnetospheric dynamics. Theoretical, modeling and observational contributions including, but not limited to Van Allen Probes, Arase, THEMIS, MMS and Cluster observations are welcome.
