Biogeochemical and Hydrodynamical Processes in Biofilms and Porous Media

Session ID#: 118661

Session Description:
The experimental characterization and modelling of biogeochemical processes within porous media has far reaching implications in the fields of soil ecology, bioremediation, enhanced oil recovery and hydrology. It is well known that bacteria and biofilms are ubiquitous within porous materials and that their dynamics impact flow fields, reactive solute transport and material properties of porous media.

For example, efficient subsurface applications, such as microbial induced calcium carbonate used for soil strengthening, require an in-depth understanding of microbial behavior and its impact on subsurface permeability and reactive transport. The complexity of these multiscale systems calls for the development of novel experimental and modeling techniques.

We broadly invite submissions that present new theoretical, experimental and computational advances in fully or partially saturated conditions involving the study of biofilm hydrodynamics, reactive transport, bacterial behavior, and multiscale coupling. Relevant research techniques include, but are not limited to, microfluidics, advanced imaging technologies, and numerical simulations.
