Bio-mediated and Bio-inspired Mechanisms for Hydro-Mechanical Modification of the subsurface

Session ID#: 124047

Session Description:
In the recent years, various bio-mediated and bio-inspired technologies have been developed to engineer hydrological and mechanical properties of the subsurface. Examples include bio-mineral, biogenic gas and biomass production by microbial processes to remediate contaminated soils or modify the hydro-mechanical properties of soils and rocks.

The complex coupling between bio-geochemical reactions, hydrodynamic processes, and hydro-mechanical interactions controls solute transport in subsurface systems and the dynamic evolution of the hydraulic properties of these systems. Improved experimental and numerical models for the coupled hydro-mechanical processes at scales ranging from pores to large reservoirs are critical for studies of these bio-mediated and bio-inspired solutions.

We welcome studies on (1) lab-scale and field-observations for model development and validation, (2) modeling and experimental approaches and capabilities that capture multi-physical processes (e.g. multiphase reactive transport, Bio-THMC), (3) modeling efforts that bridge different spatial and temporal scales, (4) comparisons and benchmarks of different experimental and modeling approaches.
