Near-Surface Geophysics: A cross-cutting Section that facilitates diverse scientific and societal studies in support of Earth sciences
Near-Surface Geophysics: A cross-cutting Section that facilitates diverse scientific and societal studies in support of Earth sciences
Session ID#: 118827
Session Description:
The Near-Surface Geophysics section at AGU was established 15 years ago to improve understanding of the complex dynamics of Earth's near-surface through geophysical imaging. Since then, one of the greatest successes of the section has been collaboration and interaction with other sections and the broader AGU community to promote geophysical research and application across numerous fields of study. These interests align with many of the Science Priority Questions highlighted in the recent CORES report (Catalyzing Opportunities for Research in the Earth Sciences: A Decadal Survey for NSF’s Division of Earth Sciences) from the National Academy of Sciences, which recommends funding of a Near-Surface Geophysics Center. This session highlights the multidisciplinary nature of Near-Surface Geophysics as an integrator across disciplines, while emphasizing alignment with the Science Priority Questions in the report and how widespread access to near-surface instrumentation would facilitate inclusion of a diverse group of scientists and students.
