Advances in Understanding Impacts of Land Use and Land Cover Change in a Changing Climate Using Earth System Records and Models
Session ID#: 119145
Session Description:
LULCC encompasses a range of land conversions, including transitions between natural and managed land-use types (e.g., water-resource management, agricultural/silvicultural practices), urbanization, and ecosystem dynamics following disturbances. LULCC regulates local and remote climate at varied spatiotemporal scales by modulating the carbon, water, energy fluxes and nutrient exchange between land and atmosphere. While recent developments in technologies and methods have greatly enhanced our understanding and assessment of these processes, improvements remain to be made through integration with observations and data-assimilated Earth system records. We seek contributions on, but not limited to, the use of observational networks, remote sensing, and Earth system models to quantify the biogeophysical and biogeochemical impacts of LULCC. Studies are strongly encouraged on the development of Earth system records and projections (e.g., CMIP6 LUMIP), high-resolution modeling of individual processes, representation of heterogeneity, validation and verification tools, and coupling frameworks for advancing scientific understanding and improving Earth system model fidelity.
