Interdisciplinary perspectives on intraplate magmatism, mantle plumes, and the deep Earth - both past and present

Session ID#: 119235

Session Description:
The petrology and geochemistry of mantle-derived intraplate magmas and their xenoliths provide direct clues on the composition of the Earth’s mantle and its temporal evolution, including the preservation of ancient chemical heterogeneities. Seismic imaging and other geophysical methods complement this picture, generating constraints on the present-day physical state of the mantle. Geodynamic modelling integrates this information to provide a dynamic framework that describes the evolution of Earth’s mantle from an early magma-ocean stage to the present day, and illuminates pathways of mantle flow and mechanisms driving partial melting processes. When applied in concert, these different approaches help to build a more coherent picture of the Earth’s interior, and the generation of intraplate volcanism. This session aims to bring together both specialised and interdisciplinary contributions across the fields of petrology, geochemistry, geodynamics, and geophysics, which address the deep Earth today and in the past, and the formation of intraplate magmas.
