Biophysical Interactions in Rivers: Processes, Feedbacks, and Restoration

Session ID#: 119890

Session Description:
River corridors are marked by interactions and feedbacks between physical and biological processes. The coupled nature of ecological and physical dynamics is increasingly recognized in fluvial systems, and the successful restoration of healthy riverscapes is dependent on maintaining both geomorphic and ecologic dynamism. In this session, we welcome contributions that highlight or uncover interactions between physical and biological processes in fluvial settings, both within and outside the active channel. Examples could include, but are not limited to, influences of vegetation (including standing vegetation and downed wood) on channel form, riparian vegetation succession processes, the role of micro- and macrofauna in altering sediment transport, and feedbacks between physical habitat and ecological processes in river restoration. Submissions detailing either the background, current, or restored state of biophysical linkages in rivers are encouraged. We welcome studies which draw connections between ecological and physical processes in river corridors using field, laboratory, or numerical methods.
