Focused Observations of Ridge Near-Axis Remote and In Situ Investigations: Magmatic, Volcanic, Hydrothermal and Biological Processes

Session ID#: 121003

Session Description:
Multidisciplinary remote and in situ studies have provided a wealth of information about the tectonics, volcanism, hydrothermal circulation, and biological processes occurring at mid-ocean ridge (MOR) and back-arc spreading centers. Many unique and sophisticated deep-sea technologies have been deployed that allow marine scientists to acquire the data and observations needed to advance our understanding of the interrelated nature of magmatic processes and benthic biological diversity. This session will bring together researchers using multidisciplinary observations, lab experiments and modeling to investigate active on- and near-axis environments, as well as scientists developing new instrumentation and field approaches that will improve our understanding of these dynamic ridge tectono-magmatic, and biological systems in the near future. Topics include, but are not limited to: crustal structure; magmatic/volcanic processes; tectonics; hydrothermal systems; ecological and biogeochemical linkages; and advances in remote and in situ deep-sea technologies (sensor and vehicles) related to MOR and back-arc studies.
