Turbulence, waves, and instabilities in the heliosheath and very local interstellar medium

Session ID#: 121250

Session Description:
Observations by Voyagers and IBEX continue to unravel fundamental properties of the inner heliosheath and the very local interstellar medium (VLISM). The complex dynamics of the solar wind-VLISM interaction involves fluctuations spanning a vast range of temporal and spatial scales. Observations and models indicate the presence of turbulence, shock and compression waves, coherent structures, and instabilities at the heliopause. The VLISM as far as 30 au from the HP is still largely affected by the solar activity. Plasma waves and associated radio emissions have been detected, as well as anisotropies of Galactic cosmic-ray fluxes. Moreover, pickup-ion kinetic waves are expected to play a key role in the turbulence dissipation and plasma heating. Understanding the nature of observations, and especially the relationships amongst them, is still a challenge. This session addresses the current understanding of waves and turbulence in these regions from the perspective of observations, theory and numerical models.
